A mortise door lock and mortise lock set, as imagined, are specific types of lock. They are a traditional type of security lock and, although they are not as popular as the more modern cylindrical lock, they started making a gradual comeback amongst upper-middle-class and upper-class homes across America.
Mortise door locks can be operated in two ways: by lever or by incorporating the standard cylindrical lock. Mortise lever locks are much more ornate than the standard lock, but even the plain mortise lock looks nice in comparison with the standard lock, due to differences in size and design.
A mortise lock set consists of a handle and a lock and also an external cover, designed to hide the large hole created when fitting the lock into the door. The mortise lock in the UK and some other countries is a lever-and-tumbler style of lock just like the original ones were. However, in the US, the more modern mortise locks are supplied with the cylindrical style locking mechanisms; this is because they are thought to be stronger and thus more secure.
